July 2008 Watching the trees blowing through the window and listening to the howling wind in the chimney, it's hard to believe this is July. Isn't this supposed to be summer? There is one positive thing about a spell of broken weather, however --it's very good for writing. While the hot sun can be a grave distraction and I find it impossible to settle at my desk and meet my target word count, I've absolutely no excuse at the moment. June was a hectic month for me. A month for challenges and surprises. Taking part in a competitive interview for office promotion, I had quite a bit of study to do over a two-week period. Thankfully, my hard work and persistence paid off and I have a promotion to look forward to in the near future. No doubt it will bring extra responsibility and training but at the moment I'm enjoying the sense of achievement and toying with the idea of setting a short story or novel scene around the premise of a stressful interview. I'll let you know in due course if this story ever gets from my head onto the page! I've arranged an 8 week break from the office which starts shortly and I'm really looking forward to being a full time writer for that period. I've loads of plans and hope they all come to fruition. Of course I've also got plenty of party invites so no more than usual I'll have to exert some discipline to ensure I get some work done. I've a few writer events on during July--meeting a gang in Bantry next week where we'll take in a meal and chat, as well as attending some of the literary festival events (for once I've the shortest distance to travel and this in itself is a novelty). As well as that, I'm looking forward to getting together with a group of Cork writers for a meal in a few week's time where we'll chat and brain storm about the writing and publishing world, taking the opportunity to chat openly without the usual worry of boring people to tears with writing talk. As usual, I've made some time for reading if you want to check out the reviews I've posted on my reading page. All You Need Is Love is brightly displayed in Hughes & Hughes Summer Promotion if you haven't got around to buying it yet. Other than that, I'm really looking forward to reading all the stories in Party Animal and once again am delighted to be doing my bit for deserving charities. I hope you enjoy your July and get to relax and catch up on your reading, Take care Mary.
